Many years ago, when our dear friend Judy Walker was working with us, we had many discussions around an annual fundraising event. On the one hand, every nonprofit has an annual fundraiser and it’s almost a testament to the fact that you are a legit organization. On the other hand, we really struggled with putting on a fancy event “wining and dining” our guests to raise money for people right down the street from us who are struggling to just feed their kids. It was too much of a dichotomy for us.

With that in mind, we landed on the Hungry Games, a loose play on the movie, “The Hunger Games.” While I’ve never watched the movie there were themes to it where people were competing for their very lives. The parallels between what we do as a nonprofit hunger relief agency and the movie do not elude us – while the movie characters were literally fighting for their lives, those battling hunger and poverty are doing the same. Last year, Bracken’s Kitchen provided 2MM meals for those in need in Southern California and trained 30 at-risk young adults in culinary arts to provide them a path out of poverty.

While we feel blessed to be able to do this work, we could not do so without your support! As we look toward the Hungry Games 9.0 where we’ll come together in an effort to raise $600,000, it's important to me that we keep our eyes on those we work so hard to serve, the working poor all around Southern California, and have a lot of fun doing it! We hope you'll join us at our kitchen in Garden Grove on Thursday, September 10th, 2026, and with your support, put on an event that's casual and fun, yet provides 10% of Bracken's Kitchen's annual operating cash budget.

Many people say it is the best chef-driven event in Orange County, and I hope you will consider joining us! Early bird tickets are limited, so get yours before they run out!
