WHO WE ARE
Bracken’s Kitchen is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Orange County California. Founded in 2013 our mission is simple: Through food recovery, culinary training and our community feeding program we are committed to recovering, re-purposing and restoring both food and lives.
The heart of who we are can be found in a statement first uttered in 1957 by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr; “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”
At the core of our mission is a deep commitment to our nonprofit charity partners, business and professional supporters, volunteers, donors and employees. Our relationship with each and every one of these groups is as important to us as those we feed.
With their help we are committed to serving over 600,000 hot, tasty and nutritious meals in 2019.
It’s been an unbelievable year and the way things look it will not get any better soon. Since the outbreak of Covid, we pivoted and ramped up our production and have since prepared/distributed over 1.5 million meals. Wow, that doubles our original goals for the entire year. We are on pace to distribute well over 1.6 million meals this year and completely squash our original plans. We have been able to accomplish this in part on the strength of our recovered food program. Since March 13th we've recovered and repurposed over 220 Tons of food that would have otherwise gone to waste.
As a result of our work over the past year, and the reality that the need will only increase in the weeks and months ahead, we have moved from a temporary emergency response to a long term sustained response. With this latest pivot we have evaluated and reviewed our team of temporary employees and moved many of them to full time status with our organization. Equally we have recruited and hired additional employees to replace those who returned to their jobs previous to the outbreak of Covid. While we experienced a tremendous amount of growth in a short period of time, ultimately this pandemic just pushed us to get to where we wanted to be much quicker. Looking ahead at the long term economic impact this crisis is having on those who were already
struggling from paycheck to paycheck we have made adjustments. We will strive to break our
new goal, as well, before years end. Equally, we will continue to work with our many new partners
and be a conduit for the Farm to Food Box program to bring even more, much needed
food items to our struggling friends.
With a new food truck sitting in our back lot, we look forward to the time when it is safe to roll the streets again with both our trucks and connect with people in a more meaningful way over a hot, tasty and nutritious meal. After all there is no better way to get to know a person than breaking bread with them. Life happens when we gather around the dinner table.
While the work we’ve done to feed those in need is inspiring some of the most inspiring work is the one on one work with our new employees, friends, volunteers and those we feed. To see the impact on each and every persons life, through our work, is so rewarding. I heard at church recently that “Generosity Changes You and Generosity Changes The Future”. We get to see that every day as people offer their time, talent and treasure in generous support and watch it change them.
Thank you again for all you’ve done to support our work.
In its simplest form, Bracken’s Kitchen delivers hot and nutritious meals in a fun, and dignified manner. The program serves the highest quality and most nutritious meals that their clients will get all week.
YOU CAN HELP
At Bracken’s Kitchen we believe that we all share two universal and powerful human needs that run deep within. The need to breathe and the need to eat. As we all know however, air is free and food is not.
Bracken’s Kitchen was founded with the sole intent of using food to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. For the 13 million kids in the U.S. facing hunger, getting the energy they need to learn and grow can be a day-in, day-out challenge.
